Dr Kathie Overeem

Dr Kathie Overeem is a psychology PhD, researcher, and trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator, specialising in the mind-body connection and emotional wellbeing. With over 13 years of psychology research experience, she integrates body-based theories of emotion to explore the transformational effects of yoga on mental health. After starting her own yoga practice in 2008, Kathie shifted her career to align with her passions for psychology, yoga, and teaching. In 2018, she became a certified Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Facilitator, helping individuals cultivate body awareness and empowerment in the present moment. Kathie’s practice combines psychology and yoga to create a holistic, body-focused approach to emotional wellbeing, supporting individuals to feel grounded in their bodies and the present moment.

Participation and content

  • You are welcome to come with a friend or by yourself. Many people attend the Gallery solo.
  • No experience is required. These sessions are designed for all abilities, body types, and levels of flexibility. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, our expert facilitator will guide and support you throughout the session.
  • These sessions are trauma-informed and includes the following principles:
    • The facilitator (Kathie) does not move around the room or physically adjust participants.
    • This is an invitational style of practice; choices are offered so you are empowered to move in ways that suit you.
    • Your personal experience throughout the practice is explored at your pace.
  • We recommend that you bring your own yoga mat, but we have a limited number available for you to borrow if you forget.
  • Yoga blocks will be supplied.
  • At the beginning and end of the session, there may be a short meditation – you can close your eyes or keep them open (whatever you feel comfortable with).
  • We recommend that you remove your shoes for the session (but it’s not compulsory).
  • You are welcome to take breaks or step out of the session at any time.
  • The option to practice using a chair is available. Please ask a staff member if you require a chair.
  • These sessions focus on wellbeing and may touch on the theme of mental health. QAGOMA is not a licensed mental health service and is not a substitute for professional mental health advice, treatment or assessment. Advice given in these sessions are general in nature.
  • We ask all attendees to be kind, respectful and courteous to all participants, speakers and staff at this event. This program will be monitored by QAGOMA staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, speakers and staff.
