About
A dead-filled horror so gothic it requires two Boris Karloffs, The Black Room is among the screen legend's finest hours. Set at the turn of the 19th Century in a tiny kingdom somewhere in Europe, Karloff's villainous Baron Gregor rules the land with an iron fist. When his kindly twin Anton returns from years of travel, Gregor sees an opportunity to steal his brother's fiancée Thea and fulfil the dark prophecy of 'the Black Room', a dungeon hidden deep within his castle. Drenched in sumptuous shadows and dripping with atmosphere, Roy William Neill's film is a spine-tingling gem reminiscent of the darkest Poe tales.
