The final film from doyen of cinematic surrealism Luis Buñuel, That Obscure Object of Desire is a radiant yet scorching examination of love, memory and the illusive nature of identity. The legendary Fernando Rey plays Mathieu, a wealthy aging lothario, who recounts his tumultuous romance with the young dancer Conchita. As he tells his story, Conchita is portrayed interchangeably by the French Carole Bouquet and the Spanish Ángela Molina, neither of whom resemble each other and each of whom inhabit the character entirely differently. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, Buñuel's film provocatively picks at the haze of time and self-absorption, questioning how exactly we understand the mysteries of ourselves and others.
