Join us for a special Live Music & Film screening of two silent masterpieces: French cinema pioneer Louis Feuillade’s Erreur tragique 1913 and the enthralling melodrama Daydreams 1915 by celebrated Russian filmmaker Yevgeni Bauer. Both films are rich explorations of obsession and jealousy, told with unique visual invention.
The screening features live accompaniment by Melbourne-based experimental musician Yuri Johnson, who has previously accompanied The Lighthouse Keepers 1929, Vampyr 1932 and The Wind 1928 at the Australian Cinémathèque.
Erreur tragique is an enthralling portrait of jealousy from renowned French cinema pioneer Louis Feuillade. When wealthy aristocrat René (played by René Navarre, star of the original Fantômas films) stops in at a cinema, he is shocked to see a woman resembling his wife in a romantic scene with another man. As he seeks answers about this mystery, his insecurity grows increasingly deranged. A riveting, anguished melodrama from Feuillade, as well as an early exploration of the duplicitous possibilities of cinema and its potential as a means of surveillance.

An emotionally devastating precursor to Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, Daydreams is a significant masterwork from Yevgeni Bauer, one of the titans of Russian silent cinema. The film tells the story of the recently widowed Sergei. Haunted by her memory, a trip to the theatre brings him face-to-face with the stage actress Tina, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his late wife. Still wreaked with grief, he becomes determined to mould her into a replacement for the woman he loved. Daydreams is a tragic tale of all-consuming obsession, with Bauer showcasing his rich visual imagination through his deep, dense frames and searching, curious camera.
