Robert Altman's pastel, Freudian dreamscape 3 Women is a ravishing exploration of the nature of identity. Sissy Spacek's meek Pinky has just started her new job as a nurse when she becomes enthralled with the garrulous, wannabe-cosmopolitan Millie (Shelley Duvall, in a breathtaking performance that won Best Actress at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival). As they grow closer, the intensity of Pinky's obsessive friendship begins to cause ruptures deep within their souls. Inspired by a dream Altman had about the two stars of the film, 3 Women plays like a sun-drenched Californian Persona, with its characters fragmenting and merging in beguiling and forever surprising ways.
