27 May 2017 – 3 Sep 2017
GOMA | Gallery 1.1 The Fairfax Gallery, Gallery 1.2, Gallery 1.3 Eric & Marion Taylor Gallery, Gallery 1.4, Cinema A, Cinema B | Ticketed
'Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe', exclusive to the Gallery of Modern Art, is Australia’s first major Marvel exhibition and the largest ever presented in an art museum.
The exhibition follows Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye and their allies and adversaries from comic book to cinema screen as it explores the interconnected films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It features more than 500 artworks from Marvel’s archives and private collections, with iconic objects such as Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield and Iron Man’s armour. Alongside the original comic books which introduced the characters and influenced the films are dynamic works of concept and keyframe art, more than 60 original costumes, over 150 props, and never-before-seen set pieces from the upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok, including the majestic Asgardian throne room. The exhibition looks in detail at Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and The Avengers as a team, while also delving into the realms of Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Curated by QAGOMA, ‘Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe’ offers a glimpse into the work of production designers, storyboarding and pre-visualisation artists, costume and prop designers, and visual effects artists. Interactive elements throughout the exhibition will let visitors delve even further into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Throughout the exhibition, the Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque will screen all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, from the breakthrough Iron Man (2008) to this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Open Wednesday night
The exhibition will be open until 9.00pm Wednesday nights.
From Friday 28 July to Friday 1 September, a weekly Up Late series will bring live music, floor talks and more to ‘Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe’. Each Up Late is a separate ticketed event.
The dedicated exhibition shop will offer an extensive selection of Marvel comics, publications, collectibles, accessories and an exclusive range of exhibition merchandise.
The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour 240 page publication featuring essays by exhibition curator Amanda Slack-Smith, Associate Curator, Australian Cinémathèque, QAGOMA; Glen Weldon from National Public Radio’s Pop Culture Happy Hour; and Roxane Gay, editor, novelist and writer of Marvel Comics’ Black Panther: World of Wakanda (2016-); with an introduction by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. The softcover version features cover art by Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, and the hardcover art is a newly commissioned piece by Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor Andy Park, inspired by Thor: Ragnarok. A limited edition box including the hardcover publication and a signed and numbered art print of the cover art by Andy Park (edition of 100) will be available in-store only from the Marvel Exhibition Shop from 1.00pm Friday 26 May 2017.
