SYNOPSIS

I am not conscious of being a humanist. It's simply that I am interested in human beings. I would imagine that everyone who makes a film is to some extent interested in human beings…

The World of Apu will screen from a 4K digital restoration

Now in his early twenties, Apu (Soumitra Chatterjee) is a recent university graduate, looking for a job and living in a humble apartment in Kolkata hoping to earn his living as writer. Three months behind on his rent, Apu is none-the-less optimistic as he continues to play flute and read poetry. When he accompanies his friend Pulu to a wedding, he undergoes an astonishing acceleration into adulthood. Attending the wedding as a guest, he bewilderingly leaves as the bridegroom with his new wife, the captivating Aparna (Sharmila Tagore). The married couple tentatively get to know one another and much to each other's delight discover a deepening mutual attraction. Life, however, rushes forth with more unexpected circumstances after the birth of their child.

The final film in Satyajit Ray's career defining 'Apu Trilogy', The World of Apu marked the first time Satyajit Ray worked with future Ray regulars, Tagore and Chatterjee. Tagore (a relation of Rabindranath Tagore) was only 14 at the time and became an instant star. Chatterjee went on to make a total of 16 films with the director.
