About
Zombi 2 will screen from a 35mm film print.
Branded as a quasi-sequel to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead 1978 (which was released in Italy as Zombi), Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2 makes up for its complete lack of narrative connection to Romero's film by more than matching it in gruesome undead mayhem.
The film's narrative finds a young woman facing questioning about her missing father after his boat drifts into the New York Harbour, whereupon the investigating police officers are attacked by a monstrous zombie on board. She teams up with a journalist and a curious couple to track her father down and the group make their way to the tropical island of Matul. They quickly become caught up in the campaign of the local doctor, who is desperately trying to figure out why the dead have begun rising from their graves – and how he can stop them.
Fulci was regularly dubbed the "Godfather of Gore" and his love of viscera is on full display in Zombi 2. Between the rotting bodies, the ghastly punctures, and the (in)famous shark attack, he pulled no punches in his portrayal of the living dead. This commitment to shocking audiences certainly didn't keep them away – the film was a huge box office success around the world and remains a major entry in the European zombie-film pantheon, shaping the way its shuffling subjects were seen for generations to come.
