About
The Beyond will screen from a 35mm film print.
The second entry in Lucio Fulci's unofficial 'Gates of Hell' trilogy, which also includes City of the Living Dead 1980 and House by the Cemetery 1981.
After Liza, a young woman in New York, inherits a hotel in Louisiana, she moves south to renovate and restore it. Unbeknownst to her, the hotel is built over one of the Gates of Hell. As Liza begins to fix its crumbling structure, she inadvertently re-opens the Gate, from which pure malevolence spews forth. Working with a local doctor and an ancient tome, she attempts to understand the portal to hell and figure out how to stop the spread of evil.
The Beyond is a feverish and hallucinatory horror experience. Eyes are gouged, blood is spilt, and the intensity creeps up like oppressive heat from a Louisiana swamp. Those attempting to follow the intricacies of the plot may be left unsatisfied – viewers should instead give themselves over to the intensity and frenzy and let themselves be submerged in the stream-of-consciousness terror unfolding before them. This is the Bitches Brew of horror cinema.
This restored 35mm print from Grindhouse Releasing reinstates footage that has previously been cut from past releases of the film, ensuring an uncut and unadulterated viewing experience. The Beyond should not be missed on the big screen.
