SYNOPSIS

Part florid musical, part artful lecture, In the Jungle joins a scientist in her 1612-day exploration of an unnamed exotic locale before a 360-degree pan of the highly artificial set takes us to a meeting of the International Association of Botanists.

The word ‘jungle’ is fraught; jungle-like environments in Queensland are described as tropical rainforests because they are controlled and understood, while jungles evoke an impenetrable unknowability cast in opposition to civilisation and exploration. Stephanie Barber’s giddy work plays with this
concept, her artificial jungle and downpour of wordplay turning the meaning of signs into a copse of unknowability.
