About
American Western tropes — lone figures arriving amid frontier tensions — are redeployed by director Valeska Grisebach onto a Bulgarian village whose inhabitants are suspicious of the newly arrived camp of German construction workers. The workers, there to earn money on a large infrastructure project, immediately get the town offside with their hyper-masculine bravado. The language barrier exacerbates the tensions, enhanced by post-war bitterness and contemporary nationalist beliefs. One of the workers, the laconic Meinhard, becomes an intermediary between the workers and the villagers, but even he may not be able to stop a showdown between these two factions.
