SYNOPSIS

Featuring two works by noted animator Anne Jolliffe, often referred to as Australia’s first female animator, as well as two moving meditations on family connections by Lee Whitmore and Greg Holfeld.

Pinchpot 2018 dir. Greg Holfeld (4.21 mins)

“A short story about art and work, giving and receiving, life and death, and things made from lumps of clay.” Screen Australia

Ned Wethered 1984 dir. Lee Whitmore (11 mins)

“A memoir of a family friend Ned Wethered. Ned frequently visited Lee’s home and brought with him mysterious things ‘he had been working on’. The film concentrates on the detail of these visits and on Lee’s family life. From watching Ned arrive through the back gate and him playing with their family cat, to Lee’s mother hanging out the clothes and doing the dishes the film builds up a poignant and often funny picture of the man Ned. ‘Why do I now remember him?’ is the enigmatic question Lee leaves us with at the end.” Lee Whitmore

Mrs Cosmos 2002 dir. Anne Jolliffe (5 mins)

“Mrs Cosmos, intergalactic housewife, is more frequently seen flitting through outer space: a large, decidedly unaerodynamic woman who always carries a magic teapot, has a piece of silver lining sewn into her voluminous, spotted gown and fights evil with powers both culinary and psychic. According to legend, long before you turn the corner, she's on the front step with a cup of tea and a slice of freshly baked cake. Today, though, she is to be found on planet Earth, at a cute, flower-fringed bungalow called Cosmic Cottage.” The Sydney Morning Herald

The Maitland and Morpeth String Quartet 1989 dir. Anne Jolliffe (28.43 mins)

“Maitland and its sleepy neighbour, Morpeth, are never quite the same again, all due to a middle-aged couple and their hobby of violin playing. This animated film is a delight to both eye and ear. Victoria Robert’s quirky cartoons are perfect complements for Nick Enright’s cleverly constructed poem, while Ruth Cracknell’s reading of all parts adds wit and charm.” Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)
