SYNOPSIS

Golden Bear-winner Diao Yinan (Black Coal, Thin Ice 2014) returns with a vibrant, rain-slicked neo-noir set in the back alleys of modern China. Stoic, mid-tier crook Zhou Zenong (Hu Ge) is fresh out of prison and intent on re-entering his city’s criminal underbelly. When a row with some local gangsters gets out of hand during a motorcycle theft content, Zhou inadvertently kills a police officer and must immediately head for the uncharted territory of Wild Goose Lake to escape the bounty on his head. Diao presents a riveting rendering of a criminal subculture hiding just out of the reach of the government surveillance in his visually inventive thriller, punctuated by moments of intense action and the best outdoor disco party since Ash is Purest White 2018.
