Curious Affection – Film Program

Presented in conjunction with the QAGOMA exhibition, this cinema project features films selected by artist Patricia Piccinini alongside those chosen in response to her longstanding interests in science, storytelling and empathy. The project comprises four thematic programs and surveys a wide range of science fiction and horror classics, together with beloved animations and documentaries.

Join us for an event screening of Hmyz (Insects) 2018 by esteemed Czech filmmaker Jan Švankmajer. Based on an early work of Czech science fiction by the brothers Karel and Josef Čapek, the film is a satire of the line between insect and human behaviour.

Join us for a one-off cinema screening of Bong Joon-ho's celebrated Netflix film about a young woman caught up in the crossfire between animal activism, corporate greed and scientific ethics.

Nicolas Philibert's documentary Nénette 2010 is an extraordinary portrait of a 40-year-old orangutan who has spent her life in captivity at the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes Zoo in Paris. Barbara Creed, Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at the University of Melbourne will accompany the screening with an illustrated talk on the role of companion animals in human life.


'Monstrous Beauty' explores a world of mad science and misunderstood monsters, body horror and social anxieties, where the macabre is entwined with stories of difference and empathy.
