About
Chiharu Shiota’s work explores how everyday objects emit human traces and hold emotion. Clothes are one of the most intimate examples of this – but what do we do when those objects break?
Reconnect with your pre-loved garments, and bring them back to life with visible mending techniques taught by designer and maker, Dr Sal Edwards (they/them).
THE WORKSHOP:
In this workshop you will learn all about the practice of visible mending and its connection to sustainability, as well as the basics of hand sewing, using patches, and darning.
We ask participants to bring their own garments along to visibly repair and breathe new life into – whether it’s ripped jeans, an item with a mark that won’t come out, or a loved garment ready to be refreshed. All other materials will be provided including recycled materials to practice your sewing skills on.
This workshop is held during ‘Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles’, and is designed for young people aged 13-18 years. No prior sewing skills required.
Bookings are essential. Tickets: $18 General admission, $15 QAGOMA Members (Valid QAGOMA Member or Foundation Card required). Materials supplied. Includes exhibition access for the attendee.
