Once upon a time… there was a Golden Book of Gifts…

Imagine our surprise when The Wolfsonian–Florida International University Library in Miami Beach, Florida contacted the QAGOMA Research Library seeking information on the John Darnell Bequest and an item in their collection The Golden Book of Gifts.

Delving into the Library archives revealed a strange tale of how a specially designed and produced object of Queensland artistry and craftsmanship that was meant to promote a public art gallery for Brisbane ended up in the collection of an American university library.

The Bequest

John Darnell (1854-1930), a wealthy businessman and benefactor from Wynnum, a coastal suburb of Brisbane, was largely identified with the Commercial Travellers’ Association of Queensland, of which he was a life member and the Aged and Indigent Fund of which he endowed with a considerable sum of money. Darnell was the son of a London boot and shoe manufacturer who came to Australia in 1878 to establish his fortune.

The Golden Book of Gifts story begins in 1931 with a bequest of ₤10,000 (which would equate to almost AUD $1,000,000 today) in Darnell’s will ‘for the establishment and maintenance of a National Picture Gallery in Brisbane’, provided that another ₤10,000 was raised by public subscription, or otherwise, within five years of his death. This amount was also to include ₤5,000 to the Brisbane City Council for the maintenance and support of the Randall Art Gallery.[1]

Golden Book of Gifts

As a result of the bequest for an art gallery, the ‘Golden Book of Gifts’ fund was created under the Patronage of His Excellency the Governor of Queensland, The Right Hon. Sir Leslie Orme Wilson, to raise another ₤10,000 to secure the John Darnell Bequest. The nominated organiser and publicity officer was Frederick L. Thomson, with all donations to be sent to the Queensland Trustees Ltd., Brisbane.

At a special meeting of the Trustees of the Queensland National Art Gallery held on Monday 8 October 1934, Thomson outlined the plan of campaign. It comprised the preparation of an artistic register to be named the ‘Golden Book of Gifts’, in which all subscribers to the John Darnell Bequest would be recorded.[2]The following Trustees were also appointed to the art committee for the ‘Golden Book’: Mr George Comrie Smith ― painting restorer, and artists William Bustard ― known for his stained glass work and illustrated books, and Edward Colclough ― known for his watercolours.

In this special meeting of Trustees, The Golden Book of Giftsis described in glowing terms as:

‘A fine example of the goldsmith’s artistry… the precious stones in the cover of the book were donated by Messrs Staines & Hardy Brothers Jewellers [Founded in 1853, Hardy Brothers is an Australian goldsmith and jeweller known for quality and craftsmanship. It is the only Australian jewellery business to hold a Royal Warrant]. The modelling was done by W. Harvey and the book prepared by Watson Ferguson Co. [Established in 1868, Watson, Ferguson and Co. is the longest running printing company in Queensland.]’[3]

A Brisbane Telegraphnewspaper article of 9 October 1934 describes the book measuring ‘12 inches by 15 inches and is entirely a product of Queensland craftsmanship, with the exception of the outer binding of dark red morocco leather. Its front cover consists of a sheet of plated gold, adorned with symbolically artistic designs and with Queensland gems set around the edges. Inserted between plates of flashing dark opal are blue and green turquoises, topazes of varied hues, amethysts, zircons and tourmalines. The inside leaves, numbering about 300, are of the finest art hand-made paper, with sheets of white silk between them, and it is intended that each leaf shall be designed or decorated by an Australian artist, with the object of making the work not only a compilation of the donors to the fund but as well a permanent record of contemporary Australian art for the National Gallery’.4

Among the Royal Queensland Art Society artists who illustrated the sample pages were commercial artists and watercolourists Percy Stanhope Hobday, Augusta Hobday, Gladys H D Powell, and Peter Smith Templeton.

The first two pages of The Golden Book of Gifts (illustrated) feature a poem by Queensland poet George Essex Evans(1863-1909), his Queen of the North: A Jubilee Odewas first published in The Brisbane Courier7 August 1909, part of Queensland’s fifty year celebration of its existence ― on 6 June 1859 Queen Victoria signed Letters Patent to form the colony of Queensland.

The borders of Peter Smith Templeton’s illustrations feature Eucalyptus leaves and Gum nuts, the hard woody fruit of the tree. The first plate is in recognition of the states outback pioneering spirit and its contribution towards developing Australia as a nation. In the second plate Poinciana and Jacaranda trees populate the rosy view toward Brisbane pictured from Mt Coot-tha Lookout, featuring the clock tower of the recently opened Brisbane City Hall — the heart of Brisbane at the time — as the 91 metre City Hall was the city’s tallest build­ing for decades after its com­ple­tion. Both plates symbolising the contribution of the arts both past, present and looking toward the future.

In addition, Queensland symbols are embossed on the cover — Queensland’s state badge, the Maltese cross was adopted in 1876. The gilt cover also includes Queensland’s rural and mining symbols such as a wheat sheaf, sugar cane stalks and farming animals of a bull and ram.

It was proposed to give each donor of £50 and more a separate page (illustrated), while each person who subscribed £12 10s and over was to have a quarter of a page. Donors of £1 or more would receive a sufficient space to include the name and particulars of the gift.

The ambitious project was received with considerable enthusiasm and many leading Brisbane firms contributed to the manufacture of the Golden Book of Gifts. Plans were made for the book to be displayed in the windows of jewellery firms in Brisbane as described in the Brisbane Telegraph newspaper article of 9 October 1934.5

However, there soon appears to be a dispute over the money that the Trustees were prepared to pay for creating the book and one of the last mentions of the book in the Minutes was on 11 March 1935 when it was handed over to the Trustees. The last mention of the Golden Book of Gifts in the Courier Mail newspapers was on 5 February 1935, three months before the deadline of the Bequest conditions of 10 June 1935. The Golden Book of Gifts seemingly disappears from public view until it was purchased in 1985 from Robert Miller, a commercial art gallery dealer from New York. Sufficiently intrigued by this object in their collection, The Wolfsonian–Florida International University Library made contact.

Despite this, in 1935 the John Darnell Bequest was obtained for the Queensland National Art Gallery, largely through the efforts of local artists Daphne Mayo and Vida Lahey (illustrated), who co-founded the Queensland Art Fund. They lead the public appeal for the ₤10,000 needed to secure the Darnell Bequest, an amazing success considering that this amount was raised during the Depression years of 1934-5.[4]

Some 235 works in the QAGOMA Collection have been purchased with the John Darnell Bequest.

Randall Art Gallery

Richard John Randall (1869-1906) was a Brisbane based artist known for his watercolours and paintings of Australian landscapes. After studying abroad from 1891 and exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, he returned to Brisbane in 1899 and was the Royal Queensland Art Society vice-president from 1903 until his death aged 37 on 15 October 1906. In 1909 the South Brisbane Town Council was persuaded to accept 600 of Randall’s works in perpetual trust, with the Randall Art Gallery opening in 1914.

To understand why the Gallery was included in the Darnell Bequest, this excerpt in the Queensland Figaro in 1926 goes some way in enlightening us. ‘The Randall Art Gallery is one of Brisbane’s most beautiful possessions, and a gem of loveliness which her citizens should be proud to possess and love. It is a deplorable fact that Brisbane has no suitable [National] Art Gallery… with its badly-lighted, over-crowded room… the Randall Art Gallery puts to shame the National Art Gallery, and further, shames all the art-loving community that we are tolerant of the indignity put upon our city by the fact that there is no adequate provision in a decent National Art Gallery for a gift like the Randall Collection to he housed therein.’

In 1893 the South Brisbane City Council occupied the corner site at 472 Stanley Street, and in 1897 the complex became the South Brisbane Municipal Library and Technical College, also known as the South Brisbane School of Arts. In 1909, when the council acquired the Randall Art Collection, it converted the library on the first floor into an art gallery (illustrated).

In 1925 the Brisbane City Council took over the structure including the Collection and eventually it was transferred to be displayed on the fifth floor of the Brisbane City Hall after the building was completed in 1930. More works were added through gifts and purchases when the City Hall Arts and Historical Committee became responsible for development of the art collection, now housed in the Museum of Brisbane located on the top floor of the City Hall.

On 18 December 1905, the Queensland Art Gallery reopened in a purpose-designed room the length of the third floor above George Street in the recently completed Executive Building where it remained until 1930. During construction it was known as the New Lands and Survey Offices. The renamed Lands Administration building is a four-story building occupying a site bounded by George Street, Stephens Lane, William Street and Queens Gardens. The building currently forms part of the Conrad Treasury Casino and houses a five star hotel. The form and scale of the building complement the former Treasury Building and the former State Library located nearby. The building was designed by the Queensland Government’s chief architect Thomas Pye in the Edwardian Baroque style. The building was initially intended as offices for the Queensland Government’s Lands and Survey Departments, when finished and occupied in 1905 as the Executive Building, accommodating both the Lands and Survey Departments and offices of the Premier and Executive Council / Courtesy: John Oxley Library, Brisbane / Collection: QAGOMA Research Library

The Queensland National Art Gallery established in 1895 still occupied temporary premises at the time of the Darnell Bequest. On 18 December 1905, the Gallery relocated to a purpose-designed room the length of the third floor above George Street in the recently completed Executive Building where it remained until 1930 (illustrated, the Gallery was on the left side, facing the building). The renamed Lands Administration building is a four-story building occupying a site bounded by George Street, Stephens Lane, William Street and Queens Gardens. In 1931 the Gallery moved to the Exhibition Building Concert Hall at Gregory Terrace where the Queensland Museum occupied the Exhibition Hall from 1899.

John Darnell Fine Art Collection

Darnell was also a generous benefactor to the University of Queensland, whose bequest endowed a chair in English and the John Darnell Fine Art Collection, which later became the University of Queensland Art Museum.

    Vida Lahey: Known for her distinctive flower studies

    Of all the works by (Frances) Vida Lahey (1882-1968), she is best known for her depiction of the weekly wash-day, Monday morning 1912 (illustrated). Known as a painter of oils on a wide range of subjects, she was also recognised throughout her career as a watercolourist of distinction for floral still lifes, therefore we have selected a suite of beautiful watercolours to profile. Lahey was among a new breed of artist — the trained professional — who superseded the Victorian tradition of the genteel lady amateur. One of Australia’s best known woman artists, Lahey was born at Pimpama, a northern suburb of the Gold Coast, and although she studied and travelled widely to London and Europe, she always returned to Brisbane where she lived and painted for most of her life. Vida Lahey in her studio, 1941 Women Prominent in Brisbane’s Art World, 1934 Exhibition opening, 1934 The art environment in Brisbane was particularly conservative, making Lahey’s vibrant flower studies highly visible expressions of modernist ideas at the Royal Queensland Art Society’s annual exhibitions. Although floral still lifes were a popular genre throughout Australia, Lahey’s handling of brilliant colour was considered exceptional. Various groupings can be made of Lahey’s flower studies — one by the artist herself — is using the same vase over a period for different studies, here we look at two such groupings from the Gallery’s Collection. The cretonne curtain 1933 Flower study (White daisies, phlox and petrea) 1965 This same jug — imported from Germany by notable Brisbane businessman Carl Zoeller — can be seen in The cretonne curtain 1933, and again much later in Flower study (White daisies, phlox and petrea) 1965, and indeed appears in many of Lahey’s works. Of interest, the flowers in Flower study, the blue flowering climber Petrea (also known as ‘Purple Wreath’) was a favourite of Lahey’s mother, the blossoms retaining their colour for many weeks before slowly fading. Art and nature 1934 Crocus and sunflowers 1955 Art and nature 1934, an exploration of the ‘white on white’ technique, is one of Lahey’s most complex still life paintings, commenting on the clash in painting of traditionalism and modernism, represented by a classical plaster bas relief by her friend and Brisbane contemporary Daphne Mayo, a book on Matisse, and the brilliantly coloured Mexican sunflower which yield dozens of daisy-like blooms. The same jug is used in Crocus and sunflowers 1955, with the shapes of strap-like leaves and jug forming an ellipse against a simple background of wall and window. Lahey and Mayo had a long association with the Queensland (National) Art Gallery, Lahey was a member of its Board of Advice from 1923 until 1930, in 1929 Lahey and Mayo founded the Queensland Art Fund, which purchased works, in 1932 Mayo was instrumental in obtaining for the Gallery its first major endowment, through the Godfrey Rivers Trust, enabling the Gallery to acquire contemporary Australian art, Lahey was a member of the acquisition committee until 1937, also a Trustee of the Godfrey Rivers Trust, and founder in 1941 of the Gallery’s child art scholarship class. Delve into the QAGOMA Collection Monday morning 1912, which shows two women doing the weekly wash with copper, tubs and bar soap, was once a common sight in Australian households. With the advent of mechanical aids and electricity this sight has now vanished, recording as it does a bygone era in vivid detail. In depicting the weekly washday at Lahey’s home in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, Monday morning records the life of most Queensland women in the early Twentieth Century. Esme, a younger sister, was the model for the woman at the washtub. Monday morning 1912 Australian floral subjects have been popular since the 1890s, and after Australia attained nationhood through the federation of its six states in 1901, sentiments of national pride, and patriotism soon developed with the Wattle a favourite floral subject and emblem of Australia. In Lahey’s lifetime, the Wattle Day League founded in Sydney in 1909, and a Queensland branch established in 1912, it is possible that Lahey painted Wattle in a yellow vase c.1912-15 for a promotional Wattle Day event at the time. Geraldton wax in vase c.1950s is of particular interest as a native Australian flower study as the Gallery currently holds only one other Australian floral subject by Lahey, Wattle in a yellow vase c.1912-15 (illustrated) which is one of Lahey’s earliest flower studies. Green vase with gerberas 1948 exhibits the intense vibrant colours she experimented with during the 1930s and 1940s. The works after the 1940s are more subdued however the play of pattern can be just as vibrant and experimental as seen in her use of distinctive table cloths and vases in her still life paintings.     Go back in time to a sultry Queensland afternoon

    Throughout the 1920s and 30s Queensland artists painted outdoors, their subject matter ranged widely from the beach, the bush, to the city. Vida Lahey was no exception, however during the early 30s Lahey was absorbed by sites around Brisbane and in 1931 painted Sultry noon focusing on the architecture of Brisbane’s Central Railway Station and the buildings in the distance located at the corner of Ann and Edward Streets up to the Turbot Street intersection. Here we go back nearly 100 years to reconstruct the painting. Why paint a railway station? Vida Lahey (26 August 1882-1968) and fellow Brisbane artist Daphne Mayo (1895–1982) had a long friendship and working relationship. Mayo, an outstanding sculptor worked on the Brisbane City Hall Tympanum — the City Hall built between 1920-30 was opened 8 April that year, however Mayo’s sculpture wasn’t completed and unveiled until eight months after the building was officially opened — followed directly by the Queensland Women’s War Memorial commission at Anzac Square — unveiled 1932. Mayo was working at Anzac Square during the time Lahey painted the Central Railway Station — the Memorial was just opposite in Ann Street — so it is not inconceivable that this subject was chosen during one of her visits to Mayo. Sultry noon [Central Station] 1931 (illustrated) captures the effects of light and shadow, the formal curves and lines of the station platform are echoed by the shelter roof and rail lines. In the middle distance to the left, the station clock tower leads the eye over and up to the developing city skyline, emphasising the height of the City Hall clock tower — completed the year before and then the tallest structure in the city — while the cloud formations above continue the downward curve. Lahey sometimes painted works in series as she did with the building of the Grey Street bridge. Sultry noon [Central Station] 1931 is paired with a later painting Central Station 7.00 am c.1935 [Museum of Brisbane] (illustrated), both are studies in tonal values — the earlier work using a range of low key colours from mid-tone hues to black, the latter a range of light value colours from white to mid-tone hues. Vida Lahey ‘Sultry noon [Central Station, Brisbane]’ 1931 Vida Lahey ‘Central Station 7.00 am’ c.1935 Contemporary views of Central Railway Station Brisbane Brisbane was a growing city when Lahey painted Sultry noon, recording the construction of the Grey Street Bridge (1928-32) numerous times the same year. The building activity saw the construction of capital works programs such as the Brisbane City Hall (1920-30), Shrine of Remembrance and Anzac Square (1928-30), Indooroopilly Toll Bridge (1930-36), Hornibrook Highway Toll Bridge (1932–1935), and later the Story Bridge (1935-40). During the Depression in the 1930s, an integrated plan of public works and a system of tolls was conceived and undertaken to both meet some of the financial difficulties and to provide work for the unemployed throughout Queensland. This building boom helped shape the look of Brisbane, many of the building projects still standing continue to give the capital its identity. Central Railway Station The Central Railway Station was the second inner-city station after Roma Street which had served as Brisbane’s main terminus from 1875. The new centrally-located station on the corner of Ann and Edward Streets opened in 1889 with a timber and galvanised iron building (illustrated) as part of the connection from Roma Street Railway Station through to Central and on to the North Coast line connecting regional Queensland with Brisbane. Central Railway Station under construction c.1900 Central Railway Station vaulted roof platform construction 1901 The building that Lahey painted was completed in 1901, the Ann Street facade remains intact today (illustrated) while the vaulted roof over the platforms highlighted in Sultry noon was added not long after. The final section of the North Coast line was completed in 1924 finally linking Brisbane with Cairns. At the time it was a 52-hour journey and even though the golden age of trains ended in the 1920s, the Queensland railway network hugging the east coast over 1,681-kilometres was the main link to the vast state’s coastal towns and ports that led inland to mining and pastoral centres. In 1931 when Lahey painted Sultry noon, Central Station was renovated with the expansion of the subway from Ann Street to the recently opened Shrine of Remembrance and Anzac Square opposite (illustrated). The vaulted roof over the station was removed and replaced with awnings over each platform in 1963 (illustrated) and between 1968 and 1984 the station was redeveloped with office towers and hotel over the platforms (illustrated). Today the station is still a major transport hub. View overlooking Central Station Railway 1931 Brisbane Fire Brigade Station The Brisbane Fire Brigade (established in 1882) relocated to the purpose-built station (1890) situated on the north-east corner of Ann and Edward Streets — from the opposite corner — until 1908 before the Brigade moved to new headquarters further north to the corner of Ann and Wharf Streets.
