Artist Barbara Heath invites children to explore the artform of jewellery through fun drawing, hands-on and digital activities as part of her Children’s Art Centre exhibition ‘Hidden Jewels’.

The exhibition features a display of jewellery by Barbara as well as objects from her home and studio – including gemstones, cameos and small sculptures - providing insight into Barbara’s working environment and inspiration.

About the artist

Barbara Heath is a prominent Brisbane-based artist who calls herself ‘Jeweller to the Lost’. She has been a jeweller for over 50 years and is interested in the personal meaning and stories jewels can hold and communicate. For Barbara, a ‘jewel’ is a broad term that might refer to a gem, a button or a found object.

Participation and content

  • Entry to the Children’s Art Centre is free
  • ‘Barbara Heath: Hidden Jewels’ features drawing, hands-on making activities using glue and scissors, and screen-based activities and interactive installations as well as a reading corner
  • Pram parking is available outside the Children’s Art Centre. Prams are welcome in the activity spaces during quiet times or if occupied by a sleeping child
  • Parents’ rooms are available opposite the Park Level Children’s Art Centre space and in the Cinema Foyer on Level 1
  • For health and safety reasons, children must wear shoes in the Gallery

  • Drawing boards are available to support visitors who feel more comfortable using a different creative setup

Sensory aspects

  • The Children’s Art Centre can be busy at times. For those who prefer a calmer environment, visiting after 3pm is often a quieter option
  • Ambient music is played in the space
  • The exhibition features bright natural light contained to a section of the space
  • The Gallery air conditioning is set to 21°C to conserve the artworks. We recommend bringing a light jumper or jacket

Food and drink

  • Breastfeeding and bottle feeding are welcome anywhere in the Gallery
  • For the safety of artworks, food and drink cannot be consumed in the Gallery except by children seated in a pram

Capacity

  • The activities in this exhibition space each have capacity limits. During busy periods, there may be a small wait time to access activities
  • Queuing to enter the Children’s Art Centre is occasionally required at peak times, including on school holidays
