The Children’s Art Centre is proud to present a collection of seven artist projects for Asia Pacific Triennial Kids. Children can explore their creativity through making and multimedia interactives and reflect on the experiences of others through drawing and video works by artists from India, Aotearoa New Zealand, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia / Palestine, Cambodia and Timor-Leste.
Asia Pacific Triennial Kids on Tour will be delivered to regional venues throughout Queensland.
Indian artist Rithika Merchant creates paintings and collages that explore the idea of ‘terraformation’, or ‘Earth-shaping’ – the theoretical process of making a planet fit for human life. In this project children can help create a new world by adding elements – such as beings, plants and celestial bodies – to a projected landscape.
Malaysian artist Okui Lala creates video works exploring language and what is lost or changed when words are translated from one language to another. For Asia Pacific Triennial Kids, Okui invited bilingual and multilingual students from Brisbane’s West End State School to participate in two video projects.
Brett Graham (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Tainui / Aotearoa New Zealand) creates large-scale sculptures and installations that feature traditional Māori patterns. In this activity, children can apply patterns to a template by making rubbings of carved designs drawn from his work.
Dana Awartani is an artist from Palestine and Saudi Arabia who uses geometry to make drawings, videos and installations. For Asia Pacific Triennial Kids, Dana invites children to explore sacred geometry by adding colour and pattern to geometric designed templates.
Malaysian artist Harold ‘Egn’ Eswar often draws inspiration from street art to explore personal stories and memories through drawing. His project ‘Monster of Wants’ explores our endless desire for things by inviting children to create a drawing of a monster that reflects their wants.
