About
Maya Angelou was an outstanding poet, writer and civil rights activist in the United States. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first, and the most highly acclaimed, of her seven autobiographical works. The story covers Maya's childhood and adolescence in Arkansas in the 1930s and 40s and explores racism, rape, identity and literacy. Graphic subject matter has seen the book banned in some institutions, while being taught in others as a critical work in the development of American memoir.
