The Goldfinch (2013) by Donna Tartt Session 1: Wed 23 Jun, 3.00pm | Virtual Session 2: Thu 24 Jun, 10.30am | On-site Session 3: Sat 26 Jun, 2.30pm | On-site Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling power. Aged 13, Theo Decker — son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father — survives an explosion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Alone in New York, Theo is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, clinging to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, captivating painting that he pulled from the wreckage of the blast: Carel Fabritius’s The Goldfinch 1654. As he grows up, the painting draws him into the underworld of art, pulling us into a sweeping story of loss and obsession, of survival and self-invention, and of the deepest mysteries of love, identity and fate.
