The narrative straddles two revolutions: the squatter–artist scene of Manhattan’s SoHo in the 1970s and the rise of Italy’s radical left during the same period. When protagonist Reno moves to New York in 1975 with little more than a camera, she finds a fast-paced, downtown art world of makers, fakers, manipulators, lovers and friends. She begins dating a ‘golden boy’ of that world — a fellow artist and the wealthy heir to an Italian motorcycle fortune. When she travels to Italy to meet his family, she discovers a rift she can’t bridge, one that sends her spiralling through betrayal and into a radical scene in Rome.
