About

Free, bookings through Eventbrite essential. Limited spaces available. Join us for a rare tour of the Gallery's 1929 Wurlitzer Organ. Explore the chambers of the organ and see the lavish console up close. This Wurlitzer Organ was originally installed in Brisbane's Regent Theatre which opened on 8 November 1929, where it remained until 1964. After a period in private ownership it was returned to Queensland in 2004 and installed in the Galley of Modern Art's Australian Cinémathèque in 2007. Hardly altered at all over the years, it remains an important part of Queensland's cultural heritage. These tours will be led by the experienced and talented organist David Bailey, who will be accompanying all of the films within the 'Lost Cinema: Queensland Discoveries' program on the Wurlitzer organ. Due to the limited space within the organ chambers, reservations are essential. Please meet in the cinema foyer at 10.10am for a prompt 10.15am start. As these tours will be taking place in non-public space, latecomers are not able to be admitted. Each tour will take approximately 20 minutes. Please note: As the Cinémathèque was built around the organ chambers, there is limited accessibility within the space and unfortunately wheelchair access is not available. Please be advised that there are three flights of stairs involved in this tour.
