About
The first autobiography to come out of New Guinea, Albert Maori Kiki's extraordinary story perfectly illustrates the dichotomy that is modern New Guinea. Born into a semi-nomadic tribe, Kiki became a leading political figure and one the founders of the Pangu Pati, which sought home rule and independence from Australia. Told chronologically and by dictation to recorder–editor Ulli Beier, Kiki opens with fascinating insights into the customs of the author's mother and father's peoples, relays myths and culture, but shifts focus to the complex politician situations of the twentieth century, increasingly polemical and urgent in tone.
