About
Leonard Fong Roka was in primary school when civil war took over Bougainville Island. Seen through the eyes of a child, the conflict may have seemed a simple case of us versus them. However, with parents from both sides of the conflict, and living in the mine-affected regions of the island, Roka's memoir of the 'crisis years' ventures deep into tribalism and lingering colonial issues. The winner of the Crocodile Prize Ok Tedi Mining Book of the Year in 2014, Brokenville is an important story that retells this dark conflict through the eyes of a young man with loyalties on both sides.
