Join Ellie Buttrose, Curator, Contemporary Australian Art, for a lecture exploring the exhibition ‘Justene Williams: Once We Were Mudskippers’. Justene Williams is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. ‘Once We Were Mudskippers’ profiles the diversity of her three-decade long practice and shows the vivacity of her recent work. In an amalgamation of video, performance and installation, Williams creates a viewing experience through an absurdist, high-energy mash up of art history and pop culture intertwined with personal narratives. Suburbia features heavily in Williams's works, encapsulating the wear and tear on the Australian dream while also celebrating the textural qualities found in the materials and objects of the urban fabric.

Free for Members, $10 Members’ guests. Bookings are essential as capacity is limited.

Sensory aspects

  • Speakers will use an amplified microphone.
  • A screen/projection will be used during the event.
  • This event will be held in Cinema A, which is a 220 seat theatre space.
  • The lights will be turned down on the audience during the event. You can leave the space at any time and re-enter the event.
  • Chairs with backs will be available.
  • This event will be photographed by QAGOMA staff. If you do not wish to be photographed, please advise a QAGOMA staff member on arrival.
