What to expect

Here’s what to expect at this event. Everyone is welcome! Please contact events.plus@qagoma.qld.gov.au in advance of the program if you have any access needs or queries about the event. Find out more about Accessibility at QAGOMA and planning your visit.

Participation and content

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are respectfully advised that artworks included in the tour may contain images and references to deceased people. The tour will touch on themes of colonialism, racism, violence and deaths in custody. Some artworks contain nudity, and derogatory language.
  • The tours are suitable for all knowledge levels. Everyone is welcome.
  • Parents and guardians are encouraged to use their discretion in deciding whether the tour feels right for their child. If you’d like to find out more about the content covered in this program, please email events.plus@qagoma.qld.gov.au
  • It’s not possible to provide a comprehensive history of First Nations art and culture in a short 45-minute tour. The tour will spark conversation by highlighting QAGOMA artworks and unpacking some of the stories these artworks tell.
  • The tours are designed as a space to ask questions and engage in respectful discussion. You can participate in discussion, ask questions, or just listen.
  • When posing questions please consider that the facilitators are not equipped to speak on behalf of all First Nations people, only on their own unique experience.
  • You are welcome to come with a friend or by yourself. Many people attend the Gallery and events solo.
  • We ask all attendees to be kind, respectful and courteous to all participants, speakers and staff at this event. This program will be monitored by QAGOMA staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, speakers and staff.

Sensory aspects and accessibility

  • The tour will be located on Level 3 of GOMA, featuring five stops. The route is wheelchair & pram accessible.
  • The tour will include standing. Portable lightweight stools without backs will be available for use throughout. Should you require a chair with a back, please email events.plus@qagoma.qld.gov.au in advance.
  • Each tour has a maximum capacity of 60 attendees.
  • Different areas of the event and exhibition will be dimly or brightly lit (you may choose to wear sunglasses).
  • The Gallery air conditioning is set to 21°C to conserve the artworks.
  • We try our best to minimise sound in the surrounding space, but sometimes there might be low level noise from a nearby artwork or the sounds of the Gallery.
  • If the event becomes overwhelming or stressful, earmuffs and sensory kits are available. Each kit contains resources for self-regulation and calming. Please speak to a staff member for assistance. These kits can also be requested in advance by emailing.
  • The bathrooms have sensor lights which activate as you enter.
  • This event may be photographed by QAGOMA staff. If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed, please advise a QAGOMA staff member on arrival.
