Close one eye and hold up your pencil at arms-length to unlock a powerful way of seeing and drawing with accuracy.

Join Dr Bill Platz for this life-drawing workshop where you will learn the art of ‘sighting’, a technique favoured by artists for centuries. Using a humble straight tool, you’ll discover how to measure proportions, angles and alignments to elevate the realism of the human figure in your drawings.

2.30 – 3.00pm session will be Auslan interpreted.

No prior drawing experience required / Designed for all ages and skill levels.

Artist, researcher & educator

Dr Bill Platz is an American-Australian artist, teacher and researcher who exhibits and publishes regularly in the US, Australia and internationally. With a disciplinary focus on drawing and research concentrations in life drawing, portraiture and the method and practices of teaching drawing techniques, his recent work confects drawing, the body and puppets. Dr Platz is currently Head of Drawing at Griffith University's Queensland College of Art. He has been working with QAGOMA to facilitate the Draw Along series since 2019.

Participation and content

You are welcome to come with a friend or by yourself. Many people attend the Gallery solo.
The workshop is designed for all ages and no experience is required. You’ll be guided by our expert facilitator – who is there to support you.
All materials are supplied. You don’t need to bring anything.
Each session of the event will present the same content and be limited to 100 participants. Seats cannot be saved and we suggest arriving early to avoid disappointment.
We ask all attendees to be kind, respectful, and courteous to all participants, speakers and staff at this event. This program will be monitored by QAGOMA staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, speakers and staff.

Sensory aspects

The 2.30pm session only of this event will be Auslan interpreted.
Speakers will use an amplified microphone. Please let us know in advance if you are hard of hearing so we can make this workshop accessible for you
We try our best to minimise sound in the surrounding space, but sometimes there might be low level noise from a nearby artwork or the sounds of the Gallery.
Chairs with backs will be available.
The Gallery air conditioning is set to 21°C to conserve the artworks
This event may be photographed by QAGOMA staff. If you do not wish to be photographed, please advise a QAGOMA staff member on arrival.
