Louis Malle’s adaptation of Raymond Queneau’s beloved novel is a freewheeling, effervescent adventure through Paris. When wise-cracking ten-year-old Zazie is sent to visit her uncle in the city, her sole desire — to ride on the metro — is thwarted at every turn. As her exploration of the city takes more and more surreal turns, Zazie discovers a great deal about the world. Malle’s adaption of Queneau’s linguistic experiments into a unique visual language led him to develop many cinematic techniques, such as jump cuts and special effects that were far ahead of their time.
