About
This epic, seven-hour adaptation of the Leo Tolstoy novel War and Peace is an extraordinarily lavish telling of a love triangle between three characters whose stories interweave amid the Napoleonic Wars.
Afforded an unlimited budget and boundless resources from the Soviet state, including access to the Russian army, War and Peace features — quite literally — a cast of thousands. First conceived as a Soviet response to the Hollywood adaptation of the novel a few years prior, the film has been restored by Russian studio Mosfilm. In an unparalleled technical marvel, the camera swoops over battlefields and glides through ballroom dances brimming with sophistication and opulence. Director Sergei Bondarchuk injects impeccable artistry to Tolstoy’s vast narrative crafting the film into an intimate, sweeping tale.
