Recipient of the Golden Lion at the 1965 Venice Film Festival, Visconti’s contemporarised take on the Electra myth features Claudia Cardinale (who also appears in The Leopard 1963) as the eponymous Sandra. Her return to her family’s home in Tuscany for a ceremony honouring her late father is marked by conflicts arising with her recently re-married mother. Adding to the friction is Sandra’s peculiarly intimate relationship with her brother Gianni, which causes disquiet in her own marriage. A steamily gothic film that cooks with a lascivious tension that cannot be contained by the dilapidated palazzo walls.
