About
Titus is a visual extravaganza of the highest order. Directed by Julie Taymor (director of Frida and creator of The Lion King stage show) and starring Anthony Hopkins in the eponymous role, the film is a full-throttled adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. Taymor refuses to shy away from the more bloodthirsty and surreal elements of the play, instead embracing and intensifying the gore and luridness of the original text. Hopkins plays a General returning from a bloody war, who, upon executing the son of Tamora, Queen of the Goths (portrayed in the film by a scenery chewing Jessica Lange), sets off a cycle of revenge from which he struggles to escape. With Titus, Taymor illustrates why she is regarded as a visionary artist - delivering a pounding and revolutionary depiction of the Bard's work on screen.
