About
This screening will be introduced by Rosie Hays, Australian Cinémathèque.
An almost wordless film, this debut feature from French animator Sylvain Chomet is a feast of off-beat visual and musical storytelling. Cyclists are being snatched from the Tour de France, and the elderly Madame Souza is driven by a quiet determination in her quest to rescue her adult grandson, Champion. Having introduced the timid, orphaned boy to the sport which would become his passion as a child, her fierce protectiveness leads her across the world. Tiny in stature and peering through browline glasses, Souza investigates, aided by a motley crew of helpers from the jowly hound Bruno to the songful and soulful ‘Triplets of Belleville’. The Triplets of Belleville pulses with a bewitching gypsy-jazz inspired soundtrack, featuring the film’s signature song ‘Belleville Rendez-vous’ which earned the film an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 2004.
