About
A neo-neo-haunting from actor and podcast provocateur Dasha Nekrasova, The Scary of Sixty-First is the story of two young women in New York City who find their perfect apartment at a price that seems too good to be true. The reason for the incredible deal: the apartment used to be owned by disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein and it has been spiritually infected by the vileness of his crimes. The two housemates soon take divergent paths as one becomes increasingly overcome by the sheer horror of the apartment, while the other is guided by her new friend (played by director Nekrasova) down a conspiratorial deep-dive.
Infused by the energy and visual palette of 70s giallo cinema and driven by a memorable score by percussionist Eli Keszler, The Scary of Sixty-First has already met with both controversy and acclaim, winning the Best First Feature Award at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival. It takes the traditional 'ghost story' in a new direction, ditching candelabras for internet rabbit-holes and a lo-fi 16mm aesthetic, while still considering the lingering persistence of trauma.
Please note: this film contains high impact themes and references to child abuse.
