When a dying industrialist (Sō Yamamura) announces that three illegitimate children may have a claim to his vast fortune, the people around him — including his young wife (Misako Watanabe), trusted associates and devoted secretary Yasuko (Keiko Kishi) — find themselves drawn into a bitter struggle over the estate. As the search for the heirs progresses, schemes multiply, loyalties shift and carefully maintained façades begin to crumble.

Made during Japan’s rapid postwar transformation, The Inheritance sees Masaki Kobayashi turn his attention to the corrosive effects of wealth, ambition and social mobility. Refusing clear heroes or villains, Kobayashi presents a gallery of morally ambiguous characters driven by self-interest, desperation and the promise of financial security. The result is a gripping noir drama in which every gesture conceals an ulterior motive and every alliance carries the threat of betrayal.

Shot by Takashi Kawamata, whose work with Yasujirō Ozu informs the film’s elegant compositions, The Inheritance balances carefully structured interiors with evocative urban nightscapes, while Tōru Takemitsu’s score — alternately jazzy and unsettling, punctuated by dissonant low-register passages—heightens the prevailing sense of uncertainty and suspicion.
