Shot on 16mm, using live and found objects as stop-motion subjects, The Grand Bizarre superbly balances the cost of time — we can trace how long a shot took by the movement of the sun — circulation and commodification with a gleeful sense of elan, curiosity and wonder at the possibilities of fabric. In Mack’s hands, standardised patterns of production become motifs matched by her giddy near-musical score.
