About
This screening will be introduced by Robert Hughes, Australian Cinémathèque.
The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On is a riveting, audacious documentary from the fearless Japanese filmmaker Kazuo Hara. It follows activist-agitator Kenzo Okuzaki, a World War II veteran once arrested for an assassination attempt on Emperor Shōwa. Hara trails Okuzaki's dogged endeavours to reveal the truth about shocking incidents he claims were committed by his superiors in New Guinea during the war. As he tracks down former officers and fellow soldiers, his efforts to get answers become increasingly violent as the revelations grow in scale and horror. Championed by Errol Morris and Martin Scorsese, Hara's film is an unforgettable cinematic portrait, as well as a work that pushes the boundaries of ethics and complicity in filmmaking.
