About
Writer director Peter Weir draws on Ozploitation and folk horror stylings to weave a macabre and slyly humorous tale about the stark generational divide of 1970s Australia and our obsession with the motor car. The mild-mannered Arthur (Terry Camilleri) is travelling the backroads of country Australia when, by way of tragic car accident, he finds himself trapped in the eerie town of Paris. Cars, and their crashes, have taken over this rural backwater, and none are more consumed by them than the local youths, many of whom have almost become one with their eccentric vehicles – more animalistic car than human. A dark tale of scrap metal, a bloodthirsty town and the corruption of those in power, The Cars That Ate Paris leaps off the screen due to its recent 4K digital restoration.
