Adapting the 1978 French film La Cage aux Folles — itself an adaptation of the acclaimed stage production of the same name — director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Elaine May delivered one of Hollywood's most beloved comedy blockbusters. When Miami nightclub owner Armand (Robin Williams) and his partner Albert (Nathan Lane), also the star drag performer at the club, learn that their son is set to marry the daughter of conservative political couple Kevin (Gene Hackman) and Louise Keely (Dianne Wiest), they must be pretend to be a straight-laced heterosexual couple in order to win over the new in-laws. A frenetic, fabulous farce, The Birdcage reunited May and Nichols as professional collaborators decades after they broke up their celebrated comedy duo.
