About
'A trailblazing piece of Asian extremity, Shinya Tsukamoto's nearly plotless cyberpunk-sex-murder-orgy channels Kafka's The Metamorphosis, David Lynch's Eraserhead and the collected works of David Cronenberg in its vision of a world where flesh and metal have begun to horrifyingly merge. After killing a mysterious man in a hit-and-run — and adding insult to injury by having sex with his girlfriend over the corpse — an unnamed salary man finds himself slowly transforming into a walking pile of metal, complete with a giant, penis-replacing drill. One of the most memorable screenings in the early years of Midnight Madness, Tetsuo so stunned the attending crowd that few noticed the print had no subtitles. A cult sensation at home and abroad, Tetsuo launched Tsukamoto's international career and spawned two sequels.' Toronto International Film Festival
