This screening is intended for teens aged 13 -17 years.

A young girl named Satsuki and her little sister, Mei, move to the countryside with their father to be closer to their mother, who is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. As the girls adjust to life in their new home, a cluster of scuttling dust spirits spark a change in the weather. Soon after, rabbit-like creatures appear, leading Mei and Satsuki to discover a hidden community of magical spirits that live amongst the trees and bushes that line the neighbouring rice fields. As the reality of their mother’s absence begins to take its toll, Mei decides to take matters into her own hands — a choice that prompts Satsuki to seek the help of her newfound friends.

An unforgettable tale of family and friendship, My Neighbour Totoro — from Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki — is a wondrous portrait of life as seen through young eyes, and a heartwarming reminder that help is never far — sometimes, just a magical Catbus ride away.

Participation and content

  • You are welcome to come with a friend or by yourself. Many people attend the Gallery solo
  • This screening is intended for young people aged 13 – 17 years. Parents are welcome to attend the film, however the event is designed for teens to experience without adult supervision
  • You don’t need to bring anything but you are welcome to bring your own water bottle into the Cinema. If you visit the Gallery before or after the screening, we ask that you leave it with the cloak room.
  • There will not be any trailers shown before the main feature so we suggest that you arrive early to allow plenty of time to enter and find a seat
  • We ask all attendees to be kind, respectful, and courteous to all participants, speakers and staff at this event. This program will be monitored by QAGOMA staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, speakers and staff

  • The lighting in the space is dimly lit
  • A screen/projection will be used during the event
  • This event will be held in Cinema A, which is a 220 seat theatre space, the lights will be turned down on the audience during the event. You can leave the space at any time and re-enter the event
