About
Both a caustic satire of upper class New York urbanites and a powerful exploration of personal betrayal, Such Good Friends centres on Julie Messinger (Dyan Cannon) as she navigates her husband's sudden illness and the shocking revelations that emerge while he is in a coma. Directed by Otto Preminger, the film's screenplay was ghost-written by Elaine May under the pseudonym 'Esther Dale,' adopted as she was uncomfortable taking credit for building on earlier abandoned drafts by Joan Micklin Silver and Joan Didion. Here, her vicious wit and skill at cutting through bourgeois self-importance shine, crafting a tragicomic portrait of a character newly uncertain of the world they inhabit.
