About
Harriet Andersson is one of cinema's geniuses. You meet only a few of these rare shimmering individuals on your travels along the twisting road of the movie industry jungle.
Summer with Monika will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
One of Ingmar Bergman's earliest success was 1953's Summer with Monika, an erotically charged tale of a young couple's idyllic weekend escape and the melancholy of their return to the realities of their lives. The film's brief moment of nudity earned it a salacious reputation internationally, which overshadowed its sincere thoughtfulness and the commanding performance by Harriet Andersson in the title role.
Summer with Monika is a warm and involving piece of cinema, and one that Jean-Luc Godard would go on to describe as "the most original film by the most original of filmmakers." There is a freshness to the film that speaks to the vitality of youth and grants an early indication of the depth of talent of its director.
