About
Elaine May delivers a scene-stealing performance in Woody Allen's sharp crime-comedy Small Time Crooks. The film follows Allen's Ray Winkler as he plots to rob a bank. His scheme: to set up a front bakery run by his wife Frenchy (Tracey Ullman) and tunnel in from its basement. Problems arise when the bakery's cookies becomes New York's hottest item, forcing Frenchy to bring in her dim cousin (May) to assist on their way to unexpected celebrity. A zippy satire of new money and the price of fame, Small Time Crooks resulted in May receiving the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2000.
