Set during the fragile peace period between the Battle of Sekigahara and the Siege of Osaka, Masahiro Shinoda's Samurai Spy transforms conventions of the chanbara (samurai film) genre into a sophisticated political thriller. Adapted from Koji Nakada's novel, the story follows Sasuke Sarutobi (Kōji Takahashi), a disillusioned ninja in service to the Sanada clan, whose pursuit of a rogue spy draws him into a web of deception, rival factions and hidden agendas. As rumours of defection ripple across a nation still scarred by civil war, Sasuke finds himself caught between the Tokugawa and Toyotomi clans' interests, fearing that a single misstep could plunge the country back into bloodshed.

Through coded messages, clandestine encounters and acrobatic rooftop pursuits, Shinoda transforms the familiar iconography of the ninja film into a meditation on secrecy, perception and betrayal. Amid this atmosphere of uncertainty, Shinoda's characters emerge from shadows and vanish into mist, heightening the film's atmosphere of suspicion and ambiguity. Tōru Takemitsu's inventive score juxtaposes sparse percussion and plucked strings, lending this unique fusion of samurai drama and espionage cinema a distinctly modern edge.
