Based on the second and third of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, Return to Oz takes Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) back to the now-ruined Emerald City, meeting a spate of new friends and foes in her quest to return the Land of Oz to its former glory. Writer-director Murch was determined to faithfully adapt Baum’s work, despite the resulting film having some much scarier moments and creepier imagery than its 1939 predecessor. Keen to develop his puppeteering experience and industry contacts, Jim’s son Brian Henson auditioned for Return to Oz and was given the role of Jack Pumpkinhead.
