Personal Problems is a largely unseen masterpiece. A three-hour soap-opera from Bill Gunn, restored by Kino Lorber and presented in Australia for the first time.
Centring on a 1980s New York couple, the two-part storyline features a fascinating ensemble of characters and settings amid an expansive and honest view of middle-class African-American life. Shot on video on a shoestring budget, the film screened on television and in a select number of American cities in 1980. Operating in defiance of the racially exclusive Hollywood studio system and combining a perceptive and articulate script by Ishmael Reed with the extraordinary performance of its cast, Personal Problems is a triumph in independent American cinema.
