About
This lyrical portrait shows how 1960s Paris transformed the young Ulrike Ottinger into an insatiable cinephile and politically engaged artist.
Like a flâneuse traversing the modern metropolis, the avant-garde filmmaker vividly charts the city’s legendary intellectual scene and her adventures with a wide array of international artists and writers. Combining a sharp eye for contemporary Paris with archival film and images of her artworks, Ottinger reflects upon her artistic apprenticeship as a queer, Jewish-German woman in postwar Europe. Against the turbulent backdrop of the May 1968 protests, the Vietnam War and the fight for Algerian independence, this masterful mosaic of intimate memories is informed by the ideals of the era.
