Freshly released from prison, hardened yakuza Muraki (Ryō Ikebe) returns to Tokyo’s underworld only to discover that his gang has aligned with former rivals. Torn between the life he once knew and this new reality, Muraki seeks solace at his old gambling den, where he is taken aback by newcomer Saeko (Mariko Kaga). Beautiful and elusive, Saeko bets intensely and without remorse. Helplessly drawn to each other, the pair grow closer, pushing the limits of danger in the pursuit of ever-increasing thrills. Along the way Muraki navigates shifting gang alliances, a lingering romantic entanglement from his past and his growing fascination with Saeko’s reckless allure.

Directed by Masahiro Shinoda and based on the novel by Shintarō Ishihara, Pale Flower is a film noir characterised by its moody exploration of obsession and self-destruction. Interspersed with moments of humour and rich cultural references, Shinoda’s story offers a striking portrait of Japanese society at the time - a hauntingly beautiful convergence of the old and new that is known to have had a profound influence on Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese. Avant-garde composer Tōru Takemitsu’s musical score amplifies the film’s cool, unsettling tone with unconventional sounds. Despite initial release delays in Japan due to perceived anti-social themes, Pale Flower has since garnered a strong reputation among cinephiles as one of Shinoda’s most enduring works.
