About
The Witches will screen from a 2K digital restoration.
The final of Visconti’s three anthology film contributions, The Witches brings together short films from five of Italy’s most celebrated directors: Visconti, Franco Rossi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Mauro Bolognini, and Vittorio De Sica. Each segment stars actress Silvia Mangano and explores a different issue involving women in modern society, with an even looser ‘witch’ theme. The film is a delightful slice of late 60s Eurocinema, with a surreal and gaudy edge.
Visconti’s opening episode finds an actress becoming inebriated at a ritzy party, with the guests removing her makeup in an attempt to dispel myths about her beauty. Bolognini’s comic short finds Mangano using an injured man to navigate unforgiving Italian traffic. Pasolini’s segment is a bizarrely concocted tale about a grieving father searching for a new wife. Rossi finds a father taking revenge after his daughter is disrespected, while De Sica casts a young Clint Eastwood as a husband who attempts to spice up his marriage with a bit of Wild West fantasy.
