About
If one lives in this world, the globalised world of high technology, all one can see is one layer of commodity piled upon another… There seems to be no ability to see beyond, to see that we have encased ourselves in an artificial environment that has remarkably replaced the original, nature itself.
Godfrey Reggio
Reggio's debut film – and the first of his 'Qatsi' trilogy exploring the relationship between nature and humanity – offers a slow-moving collision between scenes of urban life, technology and the environment in the United States. Koyaanisqatsi, meaning 'life out of balance', juxtaposes these scenes without dialogue or intertitles, instead bringing them into conversation with a stunning score by Phillip Glass.
